This video is a short presentation of a vessel, when the change of density of water is decreasing as from SW to FW, the volume of water displaced increases, therefore an increase in draft. When the change of density of water is increasing, as in from FW to SW then the volume of water displaced must decrease – hence the draft also decreases. The amount by which the draft will either increase or decrease because of the change of water density where the ship is to float is called change in draft due to density. The ship officer must know how much this change of draft will be. Given either the draft or displacement of the ship, the change in draft (either increase or decrease) can be found by; 1. Using Fresh Water Allowance 2. Using Dock Water Allowance 3. Using the formula: Change in draft due to density change = Displacement x (1.025 – dd)/dd x TPC x 100 4. Or using the hydrostatic tables.
