Egoism and altruism are examples of ethical systems focused on interactions among individuals. In Psychological Egoism, the focus is on always doing what we perceive to be in our own self-interests. This contributes to a risk of a Paradox of Hedonism in which the pursuit of happiness is the only pursuit. While psychological egoism allows actions that do not maximize self-interest, many actions are not selfish and may benefit others. Ethical egoism is a variation of egoism that assumes that everyone ought to behave to serve their own best self-interests and assumes that everyone else is also acting to achieve their own self-interests. However, what should be considered when your self-interest depends on others? This contributes to problems with ethical egoism as a moral code as decisions are inconsistent and motives cannot be publicly expressed. 0:00 Introduction 0:20 Interactions among individuals 0:53 Psychological Egoism 2:24 Self-satisfaction 3:08 Paradox of Hedonism 4:02 Problems with Psychological Egoism 5:10 Ethical Egoism 6:07 Selfishness 6:39 Self-interest 7:20 What if your self-interest depends on others? 8:51 Problems with Ethical Egoism Recommended reading: Chapter 6 Egoism. in Matthews, G.W.
