A slideshow of photos I took during my first visit to Borris in County Carlow on Monday 5th August 2019. Borris (Irish: An Bhuiríos, formerly Buirgheas Ó nDróna) is a small town on the River Barrow, in County Carlow, Ireland. It lies on the R702 Kilkenny-Enniscorthy road. The R705 New Ross-Leighlinbridge road meets the R702 to the west of Borris. The R729 to New Ross via Glynn meets the R702 to the southeast of Borris. Borris had a population of 652 in the 2016 Census. Borris has views of the neighbouring countryside with Mount Leinster and the Blackstairs Mountains to the east, and the Barrow Valley to the west. It is the home to Borris House, the ancestral home of the MacMurrough Kavanaghs. The former Bagenalstown-Wexford Railway line reached Borris from Bagenalstown in 1858. The railway viaduct in Borris has 16 arches and was built in 1860. It was designed by William le Fanu. Passenger trains last served Borris in 1931. The railway line completely closed in 1963. The viaduct is now a walkway. Borris Golf Club was founded in 1907 and is one of the oldest Golf Clubs in Ireland. Borris has a mixed national school and vocational school (colloquially known as "The Tech" or "BVS"), a Roman Catholic church, seven public houses, three take-aways, and three convenience stores Brophy's, O'Sheas/Centra and Mace). Sacred Heart Church in Borris was built in 1820 and was enlarged and remodelled in 1896. The interior was reordered in the 1970's and the church was re-roofed in 2000. The old girls school was built in 1832 next to the Sacred Heart Church. It closed in 1980 when the boys and girls schools amalgamated. and has been used by different community groups including Scouting Ireland, which has a branch of Scouts, Cubs and Beavers there. It currently houses Borris Library also houses CRISP (Carlow Rural Information Services Project). Between the Library and CRISP, there is a Tourism Information Point. Borris Vocational School opened in 1939. The school has undergone different extensions over the years. Borris House has catered for weddings and held poetry readings and concerts (Mary Coughlan, Mundy) and a "Christmas at the Castle" event in December 2011. It also played host to the National Country Fair in 2012. Borris House also holds a writing festival every summer. A horse fair takes place in Borris on 15th August. Mount Leinster Rangers is the Local GAA Club. It was founded in 1987. It won the Leinster Senior Hurling Club Championship in 2013 and were runners up in the All Ireland Senior Hurling Club Championship Final in 2014.
