Located in the county of Staffordshire, and around seven miles northwest of Stafford, is the town of Eccleshall. The name 'Eccleshall' derives from a combination of primitive Welsh 'eglẹ̄s' (in turn derived from Latin), meaning church, and Old English 'halh', meaning nook of land. Its known history is believed to stretch back to the 7th century, when a manor here was granted to Chad, the first Bishop of Lichfield. In 1153 a market charter was granted to Eccleshall by King Stephen. Historically, industries in the town included agriculture, leather and shoemaking, although the latter two went into decline by the late 19th century. In circa 1189 the foundations of Holy Trinity Church were laid. The chancel, arcades and tower date from the 13th century, and the clerestory (section with windows above eye level) dates from the 15th century. The edifice is Grade I listed. During the 13th century a castle was built at Eccleshall. This would play a role in the Wars of the Roses when, in 1459, following defeat at the Battle of Bloor Heath, Queen Margaret of Anjou (wife of Henry VI) took sanctuary at the castle. In 1643 it was destroyed by the Parliamentarians during the English Civil War. It was rebuilt in 1695 and stands to this day as a private family home just north of the town centre. From the late 18th century, Eccleshall developed as a coaching inn town. It was situated on the route between London and Holyhead. This industry came to an abrupt end with the arrival of the railways. The only public transport in Eccleshall is a bus service to and from Stafford running from Monday to Saturday. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
