Baijnath Temple Himachal Pradesh | History of Baijnath Temple | Baijnath Dham | Palampur Baijnath Temple is one of the major attractions near Palampur in Himachal Pradesh and is located about sixteen kilometers from the city. The temple is associated with many fascinating stories and beliefs. According to legend, the Pandavas began constructing the Baijnath Temple during their exile in the Dwapar Yuga, but the work remained incomplete. Later, in the year 1204, two merchants named Ahuka and Manyuka completed and built the temple. A well-known legend states that Ravana, the king of Lanka, was a devoted follower of Lord Shiva. To gain victory over the world, he performed intense penance and offered his heads in sacrifice. Pleased, Lord Shiva appeared and granted him a boon. When Ravana wished to take Lord Shiva to Lanka, Shiva transformed into a Shivling and instructed that it should not be placed on the ground before reaching Lanka. While resting during the journey, Ravana entrusted the Shivling to a farmer, but its divine weight forced the farmer to place it on the ground, where it became permanently fixed. The Baijnath Temple was later built at this sacred spot. Dussehra is not celebrated in Baijnath as a mark of respect for Ravana’s devotion to Lord Shiva. The temple features beautiful wall art, sacred shlokas, and idols of various deities, and it is especially admired for its remarkable architecture. A visit to Palampur is considered incomplete without seeing the Baijnath Temple.
