Among Muslims, the study of ḥadīth has been an ongoing pursuit since the first century of Islam. However, the academic—often referred to as Western Orientalist—study of ḥadīth only began in the mid-19th century. Over the past 40 years, academic scholarship has shifted from focusing solely on the authenticity of individual reports to examining their origins and modes of transmission. This broader approach brings us to the topic of Isnād-cum-Matn analysis, a critical academic method for dating ḥadīth. Joining me in this episode is Dr. Andreas Görke, Senior Lecturer in Islamic Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Dr. Görke has also held positions at the Universities of Hamburg and Basel, the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB), Freie Universität Berlin, and the University of Kiel, and served as acting professor for Early and Classical Islam at the University of Hamburg. His research spans early Islamic history, historiography, the life of the Prophet Muhammad, Qur’ānic studies and exegesis, ḥadīth, Islamic law, the transmission of Arabic manuscripts, Islam in its Late Antique environment, and the impact of modernity on Muslim thought.
