Played on MAME 0.217 Unlike the first Gradius game which can still be played and enjoyed just fine, this game has aged like milk. Some of the mechanics are super clunky, like for example your Force Field barely works and actively SHRINKS when you grab powerups. What kind of stupid mistake was that??? This powerup glitch doesn't happen in the vertical levels, but in these levels the bullets outright go right through it. And then there are design choices that are just plain stupid like how there's no way to earn extends unless you credit feed, which would completely miss the point of a 1CC if I did that. So needless to say I was stuck with only 3 lives and was suffering severe Restart Syndrome while attempting this 2-ALL. Salamander ditches the powerups and checkpoints from Gradius I in favor of instant respawns and fixed weapon drops, along with being able to retrieve your Options after dying. This means recovering is generally much easier however the latter stages have almost no powerups so, still, you're in for a world of pain if that happens. This run in particular loop 1 would've 100% been a game over if I didn't pick a missile before the base section in 1-6. Your normal bullets are quite crappy and even with 4 Options they barely get the job done. In 2-1 and 3-1 I didn't pick Ripple because the brains near the end fire suicide bullets and you really don't want to destroy one by accident. The stage design in this game is interesting, mostly for switching between horizontal and vertical, quite good if a little bit cheap and dull sometimes. Lots of weird dead air in the asteroid stages, stage 3 is also complete memoshit and once you learn it plays by itself. Hardest part about the first loop is the stage 4 boss. It will endlessly throw bouncing cores at you until the fight ends or you lose all of your lives, and most of the time you really can't dodge a lot. The safespot strategy I used isn't 100% failsafe either. Ideally you only want the left core to attack you but sometimes the right core will also attack, while there IS another safespot in case that happens ( • Salamander - Arcade - Loop 10 no miss - Su... ) it's very precise and annoying to setup. It seems lagging the game before the fight influences the boss' agressiveness but I haven't researched it that much, so basically just pray only the left core will attack you. Strangely this boss rarely ever attacks on higher loops and it's an easy win, totally not bugged yeah great design guys.
