Somaliland acts like a sovereign state but it has never been accepted as one by other countries. Technically a breakaway part of Somalia, the origins of Somaliland go back to the 19th century when the British Empire established a protectorate over the Somali clans of modern-day Somaliland. Imperial contention with Ethiopia, Italy and France saw British Somaliland shrink and it merged with Italian Somalia in 1960 upon independence.
