Firefighting equipment is being pulled off of firelines in locations where it is no longer needed, in a process called backhauling. That includes many miles of fire hose. Today we caught up with the crew at our fire camp, which was very busy getting the fire hose ready to be returned to the regional fire cache. Crew members untangled the hose, stretched it out, and rolled it up using a power roller. The crew stacked the completed rolls onto a pallet, which was loaded onto a truck and will be taken to the regional fire cache. At the cache all returned equipment such as hose, pumps and fittings are inspected, refurbished, and then returned to service, so they can be used by other fire incidents, as needed.
