You’re doing everything right. Checking the boxes. Showing up. So why does happiness still feel like something everyone else has but you? This morning, we’re opening Psalm 1 — and the very first word in the original Hebrew will change how you see everything. Three biblical rules. Three things to stop doing. And a prayer that might be exactly what your heart has been waiting to hear. In this episode of Still, Small Voice, we discover that the very first word of the very first Psalm isn’t “blessed” the way you think. In Hebrew, it’s ‘esher — an exclamation that means “Oh, the happiness of!” God opens His songbook not with a command, but with a description of what a genuinely happy life looks like. We explore three biblical rules for happiness — and they’re all about what to STOP doing: • Rule 1: Don’t Hate — How bitterness is a physical expense you pay with your own body (Proverbs 14:30, 1 John 4:20) • Rule 2: Don’t Compare — Why God called you a “golem” (unfinished masterpiece) and what that means for your identity (Psalm 139:13–16, John 21:22) • Rule 3: Don’t Worry — Why the Greek word for worry literally means “to be pulled into pieces” (Matthew 6:27, Philippians 4:6–7) Includes a guided morning prayer, daily affirmations rooted in Scripture, and a somatic moment that might genuinely make you smile. Scriptures in This Episode • Psalm 1:1–3 — The happy (‘esher) person: what they stop doing and what they start becoming • 1 John 4:20 — You cannot love God and carry hate at the same time • Proverbs 14:30 — A peaceful heart gives life; envy rots the bones • Psalm 139:13–16 — God wove you together (sākak); you are His unfinished masterpiece (golem) • John 21:21–22 — “What is that to you? You follow Me.” • Matthew 6:27 — Worry adds nothing; it only divides (merimnaō) • Philippians 4:6–7 — God’s peace garrisons your mind (phroureō) • Hebrews 12:1–2 — Fix your eyes (aphoraō): look away from everything else to see Jesus • Proverbs 15:13 — A happy heart makes the face cheerful • Galatians 6:4–5 — Carry your own load; run your own race Timestamps (Approximate — Adjust After Recording) 00:30 Why can’t I feel happy even when I’m doing everything right? 01:20 What does Psalm 1 say is the secret to a truly happy life? 03:12 What does “blessed” (Esher) really mean in Psalm 1? 05:37 How do I let go of bitterness and hate according to 1 John 4? 08:08 How do I stop comparing myself to others and feel confident again? 10:04 What does Psalm 139 mean about being “woven” by God (fearfully and wonderfully made)? 12:15 How do I stop worrying when my mind won’t shut off (Matthew 6:27)? 16:34 Why do hate, comparison, and worry steal my joy—and how do I refocus on God? 17:06 What does “fix your eyes on Jesus” mean (Hebrews 12:2) and how do I do it? 20:14 How do I pray to release the past, stop comparison, and trust God with today?
