Welcome to All of History! The knight’s most important weapon was himself. He was trained and conditioned from an early age for the profession of fighting. While ideal chivalric training for a would-be knight included learning to wait on his lord and other such niceties, far more important was developing the physical strength and skill needed for victory on the battlefield. This training included practice with blunt swords, mock mounted combat, and other drills. It also included becoming accustomed to the weight and feel of armor. Since only the extremely wealthy could afford to outfit their growing sons in scaled down suits of armor, many may have used coats with special pockets that could be filled with sand or other weights to simulate the weight and drag of real armor. Besides helping develop overall body strength and toughness, weighted clothing also helped the knight to learn how to move with his armor and to better use the armor’s mass and inertia to compliment rather than hinder his movements. For example, the weight of the armor could be used to the knight’s advantage in delivering pile-driver blows that had the force not only of his own muscles behind it but the weight of his armor as well. Besides the training, knights also enjoyed the best food available. They were at the top of the food chain, so to speak, and had protein-rich diets to fuel their muscle development. More details on the diet of knight and others are set out in the section on cooking and eating. #history #allofhistory #historychannel #documentary
