Activities associated with Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace on 19 December 2025. The New Guard was shown on the schedules as being from 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, and the Old Guard, also, was shown as being from 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards. The musical support was shown on the schedules as provided by the Band of the Scots Guards and on one schedule as also including 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards Corps of Drums, however there was no Corps of Drums and it was actually the Band of the Welsh Guards. This rather "threw me" for the remainder of the visit, so I couldn't follow my original plan and was just reacting to what I saw and heard, within the constraints of heavy crowds. The morning started off cold (but not freezing) and partly sunny with light cloud. It then became almost cloudless (but unfortunately not particularly "crowdless"!). It stayed dry during the time I was there, but it was quite breezy (wind can affect the recorded sound). The crowds made getting quickly from one location to another, and trying to film, quite a challenge. In places I've left uncut footage where the band isn't yet in view, or has gone out of view, in order to keep as much of the music as possible. 00:00 The Band of the Welsh Guards, having left Wellington Barracks, marching up Spur Road, in front of Buckingham Palace and past the Victoria Memorial on their way to St James Palace to meet the Old Guard contingent there. This was the first I knew about that band being there – I was expecting the Corps of Drums. 00:58 The Old Guard contingent coming onto Friary Court (at St James Palace), viewed from across Marlborough Road. The band can be seen waiting to come through the arch, and another band can just about be heard warming up in the distance at Wellington Barracks. 01:56 The Band of the Welsh Guards coming onto Friary Court and preparing to play static music, viewed from across Marlborough Road. 04:15 The Band of the Welsh Guards on Friary Court playing "The Snowman". 06:52 The Band of the Welsh Guards, having left Friary Court, marching along Marlborough Road and out onto The Mall, leading the Old Guard contingent, on their way back to Buckingham Palace, playing "Arromanches" (Kelly). 08:47 Filmed from further west along The Mall, the Band of the Welsh Guards, leading the Old Guard contingent, marching back towards Buckingham Palace, still playing "Arromanches" (Kelly), and then "The Purple Pageant" (Karl King). 10:12 The Band of the Scots Guards, leading the New Guard, having left Wellington Barracks, marching up Spur Road to Buckingham Palace, playing what sounds to me like the tail-end of "Men of Wales" (Archie Ellis), and then "The Guardsman" (Arnold Steck). 12:30 The Band of the Scots Guards, leading the Old Guard, marching back to Wellington Barracks, playing the slow march of the Yorkshire Regiment "Duke of York" (arr Balfour?) before they come into sight, and then "Wassail (aka Yuletide March)" (Rodney Bashford), and finally "The Grenadiers Return". 16:30 The Band of the Welsh Guards marching back westwards to return to Wellington Barracks.
