January was my first full month of early retirement and my first time tracking expenses in this context while living in Laos. This is very much an experiment and transition period. My goal isn’t to live cheap—I don’t live in Laos to live cheap. I’m here because I’m married to a Lao, and our goal is to live a comfortable life and maximize enjoyment. Our priorities are good food and simple pleasures that don’t cost much. I’d like to keep my monthly average around $3,200, but it will fluctuate. What really matters is the long-term running average, not any single month. In this video, I walk through January’s real numbers, what surprised me, and what I’m learning as I adjust to this new phase of life.
