Speaking of Imperial spies... what better spy than someone smart enough to gather information before even signing up? It wasn't the empire's fault that I got roped in with the Stormcloaks when I was just foraging, it was that idiotic woman leading them. I already got my revenge when she was ended. Now the Empire seems to be the only group capable of eventually standing up to the Aldmeri Dominion, as if the powerful lords of High Rock could be bothered to lift a finger for the good of man. But I'll reserve my final judgments for when I know the whole story. If the Stormcloaks somehow prove themselves more capable, then I very well may join them instead. Until then, I remain neutral. It's more important for me to fight the true evils rather than involve myself in the petty squabbles of territory. I'll serve The Nine as I see fit, regardless of who supports or condemns. Even if the Stormcloaks might have the right of it in terms of justice and ethics, their cause will fall flat on it's face if their means cannot measure up to their ends. Thinking of all this as I consolidated our items to sell at the market, I noticed how good Aela's new armor looks. Or rather, how good she looks in it. Making sure not to gawk at her body, I focused on looking into her icy eyes, stern even when relaxed. They only softened when she laughed, and she didn't laugh too often. Another thing I must reserve deciding on until I know more. My duty as Harbinger and shield-brother comes first, regardless of what romantic thoughts creep into my mind to distract me from my quest. We went to every shop we could find, selling off as much as they could buy. One of the stall merchants, a female Altmer by the name of Niranye, spoke about how the Dunmer are foolishly subjecting themselves to abuse by their own choices, and that she gets along just fine, even with all the hatred towards the Thalmor and their Dominion. The Nords here should hate her more, not less, if it really is about race. Wouldn't it make more sense for Niranye to be the spy, if there is one? She's pleasant enough for the people to get along with well enough, at least to tolerate politely. Better spy material. As we continued on for more shops to sell things at, an old woman let me know to look out for a Butcher. Just when I was thinking about finding the Butcher to purchase some beef, I happened upon the scene of a crime. The poor woman's body was carved up in a way that didn't make sense, like the attacker was having fun, making otherwise pointless slashes for artistry. If an assassin did this, they wanted to make it look like she was attacked by someone insane. Since the guard was so honest about what he knew and their lack of ability to handle it, I volunteered to help figure things out. After speaking to the "witnesses" who barely witnessed anything, I went to speak to Ulfric's Steward about investigating in an official capacity. Ulfric didn't seem to recognize me, but he didn't look much different than he did that day at Helgen. I talked to Jorleif about the murder and he gave me the necessary authority to hunt down the killer. Not much of a background check though. What if I was the killer, using this opportunity to frame someone else? Returning to the scene of the crime, I let the guard know that Jorleif granted me permission to investigate. He suggested that I speak to Helgird, who mentioned that the cuts looked like they were made with ancient Nordic embalming tools. Then I followed the trail to a locked house called Hjerim. Jorleif said it was Friga Shatter-Shield's old place, who was also murdered recently. He told me that her mother Tova now has the key. I found her in the market, dismally staring into space. She acknowledged how out of sorts she's been since her daughter died. I said I was trying to solve it and she reluctantly agreed to talk, giving me the key to the house. The house was mostly empty and so dark that I had to use my Candlelight spell. The bloody trail led straight to a chest. There was furniture stacked strangely, dusty pots and pans, and plenty of cobwebs. Towards the back of the house by a couple of wardrobes, I found a small shelf with a pile of those Butcher pamphlets and a skull amulet underneath. One of the wardrobes had a false back panel like Delphine's, except this one stank. The hidden room was buzzing with flies feasting on the remains of several people's body parts. There was also a journal. Something about the way it was written led me to believe there was another journal that came before this one. As I looked around, I realized that I hadn't yet looked inside the bloody chest. More pamphlets and another journal. It seems a mage is responsible... Going pack to Jorleif, I asked about "The Butcher" and the amulet I found. He said Viola Giordano has been putting the pamphlets everywhere, and that Calixto might know something about the amulet. Calixto's was closed, but Viola thinks that the killer is the Court Mage!
