Summer went missing on January 27th in Aurora. At the request of an experienced lost dog recovery team, SmithicAir was brought in to assist with the search. An initial drone search was conducted on January 30th, but Summer was not located. As is often the case, the work did not stop there. The team continued posting flyers, spreading the word, and educating the community on what to look for and how to report sightings. In the days that followed, sightings began to come in. Unfortunately, no lost dog recovery volunteer was able to reach those locations in time to visually confirm Summer. Still, the team stayed the course and even intensified their efforts because persistence matters. On February 2nd, a sighting was reported near Farm and Fleet in Montgomery. The caller believed the dog was wearing a pink bandanna. What they had actually seen while driving past at 45 miles per hour was the large pink bone shaped tag on Summer’s collar. A volunteer searched the area but came up empty. Two days later, on February 4th, everything changed. A kind and observant person driving west on Route 30 in Montgomery spotted a dog and recognized her from the many flyers posted in the area. Most importantly, they took the critical next step. They called the number on the flyer and also contacted SmithicAir to report the sighting. That single action set the recovery in motion. The information was immediately relayed to the search team, and by sheer timing, a couple of volunteers were already nearby. For the first time, Summer was visually confirmed more than five miles from home. A volunteer quickly set a humane trap along a tree line about half a mile into an open field. SmithicAir arrived on scene that evening and used the drone to locate Summer within four minutes of deployment, thanks entirely to the accuracy of the sighting. She was just 311 feet from the trap. A careful plan was developed. The volunteer made the long walk back into the field and slowly and gently attempted to guide Summer toward the trap. Startled, Summer veered off course and missed the trap by about 30 feet. Rather than pushing the situation, the volunteer adjusted the strategy. The trap was repositioned directly at Summer’s nesting spot, and the volunteer retreated to allow her space. Not long after, Summer was located again, moving steadily toward busy Route 30, creating an urgent and dangerous situation. At that point, SmithicAir used the drone in a new way, to redirect rather than chase. By lowering the drone and using the spotlight only when Summer drifted off course, the team was able to calmly guide her away from traffic and back toward safety. And it worked. With a bit of hesitation, Summer entered the trap. The volunteer returned once more to comfort her and carefully transport the trap back to the vehicle. One of Summer’s owners met them in the field to help bring her home. Summer’s paws were swollen, and she will be professionally evaluated in the coming days. For now, she is resting comfortably at home, safe, loved, and regaining her strength. This recovery is a powerful reminder of what truly works. Flyers, accurate sightings, calling the number provided, coordinated teamwork, patience, and using tools like drones and traps appropriately and together. Every piece mattered, and every person who followed the process helped bring Summer home.
