UN staff walking outside compound STORYLINE U.N. staffers at the organisation's headquarters in Baghdad were back to work on Saturday, this time in tents set up amid the ruins of their former building. The workers were making use of computers, generators and photocopy machines provided by the American forces. A visible American security presence was also in evidence. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said on Friday there was an urgent need to strengthen UN security in Iraq following the attack. UN humanitarian chief in Iraq, Ramiro Lopes da Silva of Portugal, has been appointed as acting head of the UN mission in Baghdad. Speaking from the compound, he said the UN were in process of creating new offices at locations around the city. The US administrator for Iraq wept at a farewell ceremony for Sergio Vieira de Mello on Friday as the body of the United Nations' top diplomat to Iraq was loaded onto a Brazilian air force jet. His coffin, draped in a UN flag, was loaded onto the back of the jet by six pallbearers, including his bodyguards, accompanied by two bagpipers.
