Day 15 – Arita, Japan Ceramic Residency 🏺🌿 Join me on a day of exploration and studio work during my ceramic residency in Arita, Japan. The morning began with a field trip to some of the town’s most iconic sites, from the historic Izumiyama Quarry—birthplace of Japanese porcelain—to the ancient 1,000-year-old ginkgo tree and the enchanting Tombai Wall Alley. We also visited the stunning Tozan Shrine, home to Japan’s only porcelain Torii gate and beautifully detailed porcelain pillars crafted by local artists. In the afternoon, I returned to the studio to load bisque pieces, admire my freshly glazed works, and do some underglaze painting with Gosu blue. I share my process for painting with Gosu, from sketching the design to carefully filling the shapes with colour. In this video, you’ll see: ✨ The historic Izumiyama Quarry and hidden shrine to Lee Sam Pyeong 🌳 A 1,000-year-old ginkgo tree in its lush summer green 🏯 Tozan Shrine’s one-of-a-kind porcelain Torii gate and porcelain pillars 🖌 My process for painting with Gosu underglaze 🍶 A glimpse of my wheel-thrown bowl featuring hand-painted blue bunnies and a purple heart Arita continues to surprise me with its history, artistry, and warmth—and I’m falling more in love with this town every day. My name is Yvonne, I am a potter from Vancouver BC. To me, pottery is my meditation, my getaway from stress and life. This channel is my Vlog of my pottery journey to show others the beauty of pottery, how relaxing it is, and how you can do it too! As I mould clay, a feeling of calming and relaxation flows through me. It is a meditative process, which is why I stay silent as I work.
