Japan Pottery Residency Day 16: Painting Japanese Patterns & A Corgi Bowl with Gosu Blue

Day 16 – Arita, Japan Ceramic Residency 🏺💙 Today in my residency at Kouraku Kiln, I started the morning painting a porcelain mug inspired by Japanese wave and floral patterns. I sketched the design in pencil, outlined with a dark shade of Gosu blue, and filled the shapes with a diluted medium blue to create soft, flowing textures. Afterward, I painted a bowl featuring two playful corgis, using Gosu underglaze and line brushwork to add detail and rhythm. In the afternoon, I joined the residency intern at the factory for clear glazing, preparing a batch of my bisque pieces for their final firing. Each step—from sketching to painting to glazing—has taught me more about the traditions of Arita porcelain, while also helping me find my own artistic voice during this residency.
