Day 17 – Arita, Japan Ceramic Residency 🌧️🖌️ It was a rainy day in Arita, so I spent most of my time inside the studio focusing on underglaze painting. I worked on a set of porcelain plates, starting with pencil sketches and then carefully outlining each design in dark Gosu blue with a fine brush. Afterward, I filled the shapes using a medium shade of blue, diluted with water, and a fat brush that allowed me to drag the pigment smoothly across the porcelain. Watching the pencil sketches transform into crisp blue patterns felt both challenging and meditative. In the afternoon, I loaded some of my dried work into the bisque kiln—always a nerve-wracking but exciting step. To end the day, I went on a “treasure hunt” right next to the studio. It’s a quirky Arita tradition where you can dig through stacks of factory-rejected ceramics. Dusty, old, and sometimes imperfect, but each piece still beautifully crafted. I filled a basket with my finds and paid a flat fee—it felt like discovering hidden gems at a bargain price. In this video, you’ll see: ✨ My process for outlining and painting with Gosu underglaze 🍶 Using different brushes for precision and filling 🔥 Loading bisque pieces into the kiln 🔎 Treasure hunting through shelves of factory-rejected ceramics 🌸 Reflections on learning, patience, and discovery in Arita Every rainy day in Arita still feels like a gift—quiet, inspiring, and full of little surprises. My name is Yvonne, I am a potter from Vancouver BC. To me, pottery is my meditation, my getaway from stress and life. This channel is my Vlog of my pottery journey to show others the beauty of pottery, how relaxing it is, and how you can do it too! As I mould clay, a feeling of calming and relaxation flows through me. It is a meditative process, which is why I stay silent as I work.
