The Malhar farmhouse is a contemporary architectural retreat situated on a six-acre farm in North Payyannur. Designed for an NRI based in Dubai, this property serves as a weekend home and event space, reflecting the owner's passions for music and agriculture. The centrepiece of the property, the Malhar Music Shelter, is a dedicated area for musicians to gather, play, and enjoy the serene environment, embodying the owner’s vision for a musical haven. Every aspect of the Malhar farmhouse is meticulously customised, utilising local materials such as laterite to enhance its connection to the landscape. The exposed laterite walls and organic tiering of the landscape with boulders create an exploratory feel. The house is designed to sit within the landscape, not above it, ensuring minimal disruption to the natural contours of the land. The primary materials used include Kota stone for the flooring, teakwood for the interior woodwork, and patterned tiles for the roof, with walls finished in a neutral off-grey texture to allow light and nature to take centre stage. The spatial organisation of the Malhar farmhouse is thoughtfully divided into different zones, providing a seamless transition from public to private spaces. The open sit-out area serves as a threshold, leading to semi-public spaces such as the dining area, living room, kitchen, and one bedroom. The private spaces consist of a family living area and two additional bedrooms, making it a three-bedroom farmhouse with two living areas. While traditional architecture in Kerala emphasises organised spaces and planning, the Malhar farmhouse adopts a tropical contemporary approach. This design is responsive to the climate, using natural materials and contemporary planning to create a residence that feels both modern and in harmony with its environment.
