Here at Bob’s Watches, we receive thousands of timepieces from all over the world, each with its own story and unique personality. From unwanted used timepieces to vintage Rolex watches; we even get in a few fake watches every now and then. However, we have no idea exactly what will be inside the incoming packages. Introducing ‘Watch in the Box’ - a brand-new video series where we take one random incoming box and open it up on video, so that you can be part of the big reveal. From vintage collectibles that are worth a small fortune, to counterfeit watches so poorly made that you will want to take a shower and lay down for a while, we see them all. In this episode, we examine a unique vintage timepiece, the Rolex GMT Master 1675. This reference is a stunning example and a favorite among a number of watch collectors. When it comes to watch aficionados who love aviation, nothing hits the spot quite like a vintage GMT Pepsi. Considering the age, this piece is truly remarkable. In our first episode, we unboxed this stunning example of the Rolex GMT Master 1675 from Long Island, NY. But first, a quick history on this watch. The GMT Master debuted in 1955 with ref. 6542. This model was the first timepiece in the Rolex catalog to offer a rotatable 24-hour bezel as well as a dedicated 24-hour hand on the dial. Both of these features allow the wearer to sync with local time while keeping home time present, making the GMT Master a must-have for pilots and avid travelers alike. The ref. 6542 remained in production until 1959, when the ref. 1675 was introduced to market. With it came a new generation of movements via the calibre 1565 and 1575. The calibre 1565 was used until 1964 when it was replaced by the calibre 1575 with hacking seconds. Another notable upgrade made to the ref. 1675 is the addition of crown guards and the distinction of “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” printed on the dial. The ref. 1675 enjoyed a long production run that spanned into the 1980s and resulted in many dial variations, making it one of the most interesting vintage timepieces to collect. The example that you see here today features a stunning “Pepsi” bezel. The blue and red aluminum insert has faded nicely over time while retaining legible 24-hour markers. Most of a vintage watch’s value lies in the dial. Earlier variations of the ref. 1675 present the time on a glossy dial, similar to this particular GMT Master. Rolex only produced the glossy variant for about five years, making them a little bit harder to come by on the pre-owned market. This example is in very good condition and features luminous plots in a nice, even patina throughout the hour markers and hands, indicating that the hands have not been replaced and are factory original. The dial also features the original small triangle 24-hour hand, further indicating that the dial is in factory original condition. This is a really nice example of the GMT Master 1675. The case appears to be unpolished and maintains the original bevels. The bracelet is also in great condition with only a few minor scratches and some slight stretch to the links that are consistent with an older Rolex. A vintage GMT Master ref. 1675 in good condition and with a rare glossy dial, original rivet-link bracelet, and unpolished finish is very desirable among collectors and commands a price upwards of $25k.
