And to show you how, we used the optional table attachment for the EM-1010 and our Mighty Hoops. Car mats are a popular niche, especially for car dealerships and body shops that want to offer customization service to their clients. These are potential partners that you, as an embroiderer, can look for. You can download the embroidery design that we used in this video to start practicing your car mat embroidery skills. For this project you’ll want to use: 40 weight thread 80/12 needles recommended for thicker mats with rubber backing A Mighty Hoop Spring clamps Water-soluble stabilizer as your topping Let’s talk profit. We found these mats at Walmart for as low as $13, but you can find cheaper options if you buy them wholesale. Comparing custom car mat priced on Etsy, you can sell these for around $75 depending on the design. This leaves you with a hefty profit of about $62. Spring clamps What makes these car mats hard to embroider is the rubber on the back. This rubber is dense and may cause issues like needle breaks and give embroiderers a really hard time hooping car mats with their standard hoops. Depending on how thick your car mats are, we suggest you move up to a thicker needle and lower your speed to 800 spm. As far as hooping goes, we suggest using magnetic hoops that allow you to hoop thick items. By placing the bottom part of the hoop under the mat and placing the top part right over the mat, the strong magnets will clamp together creating secure stabilization. We are using the extended table to help hold up the weight of these larger, heavier items. This helps the stabilization and prevents loss of registration. We also suggest lowering your tension slightly to avoid thread breaks and using spring clamps for extra support clamping your mat and hoop. Once you have your car mat secured on your machine, place your water-soluble stabilizer right on top of where the design will be. This topping will keep our stitches from sinking into the fabric, making the embroidery more detailed. After that, you’re ready to start embroidering. To clean up your finished product, all you have to do is remove the topping by just ripping it off or by washing it away with a little bit of water. By following these tips, the EM-1010 should handle a car mat like this one with no problem. Keep in mind that we demonstrated this on an EM-1010, and if our semi-commercial machine can do it, our commercial single heads such as the MT-1501 and the TC15-1 can definitely complete these items too.
