How do you get your peace and quiet back without starting conflict? First thing’s first, it helps to know what’s an actionable noise disturbance and what’s just typical noise—it all comes down to what’s “reasonable.” That can be tough, because everyone has a different standard. But, think about your neighbour mowing the lawn: perfectly reasonable at 2 pm, less reasonable at 2 am. Also, most cities have noise bylaws, which stipulate in much more specific terms what types of noise are allowable and which can result in a visit from an officer. Once you’ve established that noise is unreasonable, what do you do? The first step, assuming you’re comfortable with it, is to simply ask the noise-maker to stop. Be polite, be understanding, and explain clearly why you think the noise they’re making is unreasonable. You can also offer compromises. If you live in an apartment or condo building, it can be harder to figure out exactly where the noise is coming from. It can also be more uncomfortable approaching a neighbour from a different floor that you’ve never met. In either case, the next step is to report the noise to a higher authority. In an apartment, that’s the landlord or building manager. In a condo building, possibly the strata council (a.k.a. condo board). In particularly bad cases, you can call the police non-emergency line as a last resort. In cases of persistent noise issues, you can also pursue legal action. Now, suing your neighbours is the nuclear option—you’ll never unburn that bridge. But in the worst cases, you may have no other options. 00:00 Intro 00:29 When can you make a noise complaint? 01:50 How do you deal with noise disturbances? 02:49 1. Speak to them directly 03:36 2.
