Kate Pickering – Building a Body of Belief, 21 April 2023

This performative lecture by Kate Pickering takes place within the context of Murmuring Matter (21 – 23 April 2023), the fourth edition of Urgency Intensive by the Jan van Eyck Academie. Part perambulatory lecture, part ritual re-enactment, Kate Pickering will narrate the history of the site of the Jan van Eyck Academie in relation to its convictions. Through three locations we will explore mythic histories, disorienting rituals and reorienting story-worlds, thinking through the building as a body that has oriented toward different beliefs at different times. The lecture asks, in the words of Sara Ahmed, ‘what difference does it make ‘what’ we are oriented toward?’ and, in destabilising times, what does the building-body of the Academie stand for now? The ongoing environmental breakdown has made evident the agency of viral, vegetal, animal, atmospheric, and other material manifestations, which have evaded human control and reclaimed an active role in the unfolding of earthly narratives. Bridging the analytical and sensorial, the verbal and non-verbal, the cognitive and affective, Murmuring Matter traverses multiple scales of materials, bodies, river-, forest-, and cityscapes of Maastricht and beyond as gateways to access wider planetary stories and cosmopolitics.
