(11ALIVE) As the nation bids farewell to President Jimmy Carter on Thursday morning, with presidents, vice presidents and dignitaries from around the world attending his National Funeral Service, his family -- as they were throughout the 39th president's life -- remained a central piece of the proceedings. That included three of President Carter's grandsons delivering words at the service at the National Cathedral. Joshua Carter first spoke at length first with a Bible reading, Romans 8:1-18, 38-39. Before the reading he spoke about President Carter's devotion to faith -- famously teaching Sunday School for many years -- and recalling Sundays with his grandfather at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, as well as speaking on the 39th president's philosophy of peacemaking and helping those in need as the "bedrock" of his faith. Later Jason Carter -- the one-time Georgia state senator, Democratic gubernatorial nominee and active chair of the Carter Center Board of Trustees -- delivered remarks about his grandfather. The son of the Carters' first child, John William "Jack" Carter, and perhaps the most public-facing of the Carter grandchildren, Jason Carter focused on Carter's life of service and faith as well as recounted his personal recollections of Jimmy Carter's humility. Jason Carter spoke of how "my grandfather was likely to show up at the door in some 70s short shorts and some Crocs" to laughs, and said the Carter home was like "thousands of other grandparents' house all across the South -- fishing trophies on the walls; the refrigerator of course was papered with pictures of grandchildren and then great-grandchildren."
