Vic Firth Marching Percussion 101: 11 Essential Drumline Warmup Exercises Recorded with the VF All-Star SoCal Drum Line 00:12 LEVEL 1 Bronze 01:35 LEVEL 2 Silver 02:50 LEVEL 3 Gold 03:59 LEVEL 4: Platinum 05:01 LEVEL 5: Diamond ABOUT EXERCISE #5: "ROLL PRIMER" This exercise works on establishing the correct pressure points in the fulcrum to establish a proper buzz and double bounce roll. • Buzzes: In the first section of the exercise, establish a consistent motion with the forearm and wrist with the check and add pressure in the fulcrum to push the stick into the head for the buzz. Make sure that the motion and volume doesn't change from check to buzz. • Double Bounces: A double bounce requires slightly less pressure in the fulcrum than the buzz. Listen to the spacing of the double bounce and regulate the fulcrum pressure to create evenly spaced 32nd notes. Slower tempos will require less fulcrum pressure, faster tempos will require more. • As you move into the 2nd section of the exercise (on both buzz and double bounce), maintain evenness of rhythm, consistent motion and consistency of volume from hand to hand. Use a full stroke height at the slowest tempo & gradually lower the height as you speed up. • Practice with the play-along video or tracks to make sure you're maintaining a consistent tempo, especially in the 3rd section where the tendency might be to drag the rolls at the faster tempos. ----- DOWNLOAD THE EXERCISE PACKET (SCORE AND PARTS): https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/r2lrxd... ----- Are you or your drumline in desparate need of a great fundamental program? The exercises included in this project are specifically designed to provide the beginning to intermediate drumline with a solid foundation for building individual and ensemble technique. We've assembled an "all-star" battery percussion section to not only demonstrate each of the exercises at 5 different tempos, but present them with video and audio tracks so that you and your percussion section can play along to help establish great tempo control and match the sound of a high quality ensemble. To make it even more fun to practice, we have added backing tracks to each of the exercises in the Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond levels so that you can test your current abilities and continue to aspire to improve!
