Armed gunmen marched and supporters of different Palestinian organisations waved flags as protesters commemorated those who died when, in April 2002, Israelis raided the Jenin refugee camp after months of tensions between the two sides. The eight-day military thrust into the camp came in response to a suicide bombing at an Israeli hotel which killed 29 people at a festive Passover holiday dinner. The Jenin raid left 52 Palestinians dead, according to a UN report approximately half were civilians. Twenty-three Israeli soldiers also died during the offensive. Palestinian officials at first said that hundreds of civilians had been "massacred" in the Jenin raid but later retracted the statement. Amnesty International and other human rights groups accused the Israeli army of using Palestinians as human shields and preventing rescue teams from entering the camp to treat wounded Palestinians. The action also drew international outrage. The subsequent United Nations investigation rejected claims that hundreds of Palestinian civilians were killed.
