Wideshot of Arafat and journalists STORYLINE: Israeli troops shot dead three Palestinians in West Bank clashes on Wednesday, and Israeli authorities also destroyed four homes in east Jerusalem that belonged to Palestinians convicted of orchestrating a series of deadly bombings. In the West Bank town of Jenin, soldiers held a 12-hour stand off with four wanted Palestinian militants, the army and Palestinian officials said. The men, prominent members of the Jenin branch of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, finally surrendered and were taken into custody, the officials said. Gun battles erupted sporadically between the soldiers and the gunmen and at least one soldier was lightly wounded, the army said. More than 20 suspected Palestinian militants were arrested in West Bank sweeps overnight, the army said. Israel has reoccupied nearly every major West Bank Palestinian city and town, except Jericho, since June. Soldiers often impose curfew and conduct mass arrests in the areas. In east Jerusalem, Israeli authorities used concrete to seal off three separate homes of three Hamas militants convicted of organising the bombings that killed 35 people, including five Americans in an attack at the Hebrew University in July. Trucks pumped concrete into the three homes making them uninhabitable. The multi-story buildings were not torn down because they included additional apartments where other families lived, Israeli police said. A home belonging to a fourth Hamas member in the group was partially blown up and then bulldozers demolished the remainder, police said. At the recent trial of the four, the group's leader was convicted and received 35 consecutive life terms. Two other members were also given life in prison, while the fourth received a 60-year sentence. Israel has demolished dozens of homes of militants and suicide bombers in an attempt to deter other Palestinians from carrying out attacks on Israelis. However, Wednesday's action marked the first time Israel had torn down the homes of militants in east Jerusalem during the current Palestinian uprising that began 28 months ago. All the previous demolitions took place in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Arafat criticized recent Israeli military actions.
