Altered Mental Status (AMS) is a broad medical term used to describe changes in consciousness, cognition, or behavior. It can range from mild confusion to complete unresponsiveness, making it a critical emergency symptom for healthcare providers, EMTs, and paramedics to recognize. In this video, we explain: Common causes of AMS, including hypoxia, infection, stroke, metabolic imbalances, trauma, overdose, and more. The AEIOU TIPS mnemonic, a simple tool that helps EMS providers remember frequent causes of AMS: A – Alcohol/Acidosis E – Epilepsy/Electrolytes I – Infection O – Overdose/Oxygen deprivation U – Uremia (kidney failure) T – Trauma/Temperature I – Insulin (hypoglycemia, DKA) P – Psychiatric/Poisoning S – Stroke/Shock We also cover mental status assessment tools, including the AVPU scale (Alert, Verbal, Painful, Unresponsive) and orientation questions (person, place, time, event). If a patient is not fully alert and oriented ×4, they are considered to have altered mental status. Management of AMS includes providing supportive care, addressing the underlying cause, and transporting the patient for advanced evaluation.
