Kaspar Beelen introduces the ‘Environmental Scan’ as a method for investigating hidden biases in digitised newspaper collections. The presentation provides a critical investigation of the (19th-century) British Newspaper Archive. Is the digitised press representative of the newspaper landscape? Which voices are missing or under-represented in the corpus? Kaspar Beelen is a digital historian, who explores the application of machine learning to humanities research.
