Kevin Owens and the Undertaker go one on one at WrestleMania 32. On the February 15, 2016 Raw, Owens won the WWE Intercontinental Championship for a second time, defeating Dean Ambrose (now known as Jon Moxley in AEW), Tyler Breeze, and Cody Rhodes (then under the Stardust persona) in a Fatal 4 Way match. This reign, however, is short lived, as he lost the championship to Ziggler six days later at FastLane. The following night on Raw, after losing to Ziggler in a rematch for the Intercontinental Championship, Owens would go to the Authority and pleaded with Triple H (then-WWE World Heavyweight Champion) to give him another opportunity at Ziggler. Triple H declined, but offered Owens an alibi; Triple H announced a Winner’s Choice 20 man battle royal at Roadblock, in which the winner of the Battle Royal will be able to select which opponent he will face at WrestleMania 32. Two weeks later, at Roadblock, Owens won the Winner’s Choice Battle Royal, last eliminating Sami Zayn. 48 hours later on Raw, Owens announced he would challenge the Undertaker to a match at the Showcase of the Immortals. Despite backlash from Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, Owens insisted on this opportunity. Days later on the March 17 SmackDown, Owens challenged Kane to a one on one match; Kane would win via disqualification after Owens attacked Kane with a steel chair. On the following episode of Raw, Owens called out the Undertaker, proclaiming the latter is all but a mortal man whose legacy was tarnished when he decided to return at WrestleMania the prior year. Owens would further add more fuel to the fire, stating the Undertaker’s yard is no more. This statement caused lightning to strike the ring posts, which bewildered Owens. On the March 24 SmackDown, during a match against AJ Styles, smoke began filling the ringside area, which caused Owens to leave the ring and lose by countout. On the March 28 Raw, just days before WrestleMania, Owens appeared with a customized casket with the Undertaker’s signature symbol enshrined on the center. Owens subsequently stated he will be the second man to defeat the Undertaker, but will be the first man to permanently bury the legend of the Undertaker. The lights would go out, and when the lights came back on, the Undertaker appeared and executed a Last Ride on Owens, firing the opening salvo of what’s to come at the Showcase of the Immortals.
