(12 Mar 2014) THE STARS COME OUT FOR MANISH MALHOTRA SHOW AT LAKME FASHION WEEK Bollywood's favorite fashion designer, Manish Malhotra, opened Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014 in Mumbai with his collection "A summer Affair." The catwalk was turned into a mini forest, with carved tree trunks, flowers and vines, for the models to walk on. Malhotra's summer / resort line showcased 60 ensembles, many adorned by Bollywood stars. The designer used intricate Chantilly lace, translucent georgette, sheer organza and cotton tulle with white thread embroidery. Malhotra's trademark hues of navy blue and grey were used included. He also blended in shades of pink - blush to pale pink - and used neutral beige, white and black. "A summer Affair" played with romantic notions by using layers, prints and overlapping embellishments. For women's wear, Malhotra teamed boleros with kurtas (an Indian long top that falls above / below the knee, traditionally worn with trousers), incorporated practical pockets in long summer skirts, and brought in comfortable / slim trousers for the summer. Playing with the traditional saree, the designer added visible zips to the pre-stitched sarees and cholis (a blouse worn with the saree). The designer also featured dress kurtas with cinched waist, sheer tank tops over kurtas, wide pleated palazzos and tiny collars on kurtas and cholis in the collection. For the men's wear, prints were used, along with tonal embroidery and layers. The final set of clothes sported yellow, ecru and pastel prints for both men's and women's wear. The show ended with swing coats and pants, long gowns, high neck women's sherwanis, and a tiny printed three-quarter sleeve choli worn with a lehenga. Bollywood actors Urmila Matondkar, Kajol, Tanisha, and Sonakshi Sinha walked the ramp wearing Malhotra's summer line. Sinha walked the catwalk in a sheer black kurta with intricate white embroidery and was joined by the designer himself for the show finale. Speaking about his choice of Sinha for showstopper, Malhotra said that he likes the way she carries Indian clothes and also admires her evolving roles in her films. "From 'Lootera' onwards she is doing different kinds of films, she has lost lot of weight. So I think Sonakshi is very good actor, in that sense, to work with, because there is a lot of change that she's going through as well, and so there is lot of new things you can do with her," he said.
