Mankinholes sits just above Todmorden and is home to some of the oldest buildings in the town. Generations here have spoken the story about phantom black dogs that are heard and seen moving across the moors, hills and water on route to Todmorden, on misty Halloween nights. But what are they hunting? The dogs. also known as Gabriel Hounds or Gabriel Ratchets, are said to have human faces, can run through the sky, and sound like the screech of geese. They are also said to be the lost souls of unbaptised children.... and if you hear them, they are an omen of death!
