Over 400,000 patients are treated here every year, for a huge range of illnesses. Here life and death are daily realities. From the front line to the back office hard decisions have to be made. The pressure is always, always on. Cameras spend Winter 2018 in the hospital as patients and staff give deep access to their stories. In Episode One we meet mother of two, 31 year old, Tracie Doolin. Only two months ago, Tracie was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Today, we see her coming into hospital for a radical hysterectomy. This hugely invasive surgery means she will have her cervix, ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes removed. Mr Feras Abu Saadeh leads her operation. But surgery alone may not be enough to save Tracie. If her cancer has spread beyond her reproductive organs she faces a very uncertain future. 28 year old Chloe Pedreschi is one of the hospital’s longest stay patients. A year ago Chloe had a stem cell transplant to battle a rare disease of the bone marrow called Aplastic Anaemia. The slightest infection could prove fatal so Chloe must remain in isolation but every day of every week of every month her devoted mother comes to visit. Site Nurse Manager Roz Gillen is just 2 hours into her shift. The hospital is full and staff are under sever pressure. Roz has to ensure the hospital remains clinically safe as she juggles staff and patients and critical care beds. 2 years ago Tim O’Neill from Waterford was diagnosed with skin cancer. His treatment required the removal of his left ear. Today he faces further surgery but this time for a more positive end …. a new ear. From the makers of the critically acclaimed documentaries Keeping Ireland Alive, Crumlin (Winner Celtic Media Festival, IFTA Nominee Best Documentary Series) and Trauma comes Hospital Stories Dublin, a major 4 part documentary series offering unprecedented access into one of Ireland’s largest public institutions – St James’ Hospital. This series of films document the work carried out by over 4,500 staff as they seek to treat the sick and the vulnerable – some 400,000 every year. Their stories, together with the stories of the patients they treat, offer a whole look at how a busy modern hospital functions. All human life is there …. in fact life and death (and everything in between) is a daily reality in St James’. Deep access allows the producers tell the complete story of the hospital, a sensitive but searingly honest portrayal of the challenges faced by staff and management at all levels. The series is equally about the personal stories of patients, the administrators and the medical professionals. While this series is structured around St James – stories are multilayered – love stories between a parent and a child, a husband and wife; struggles around homelessness, mental health, alcohol and drug addiction; the HIV and STI clinics bring us into themes around sexual mores; Medicine for the Elderly bring us into loneliness and aging. And of course there are the cutting edge surgeries and treatments. Welcome to the OFFICIAL Curious?: True Heroes YouTube Channel. Watch the work of hospital staff, police, coast guards and many more.
