Seth Bordenstein: A Unified View of Life: Holobiont Biology for the 21st Century

Lack of mathematical theory limits our predictive understanding of the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of holobionts, and that is affecting our ability to successfully understand, manage, and conserve them. In this February 9, 2026 seminar at a workshop at the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery, Dr. Bordenstein opened the workshop with biologists and mathematicians to discuss the current challenges and opportunities for the mathematical modeling of holobiont systems. Participants developed new ‘eco-evolutionary’ models that explicitly account for intertwining ecology and evolution, and for the consequences of this interdependence. In this talk, Dr. Bordenstein summarized the history, imperative, growth, and future of unifying microbiology and macrobiology under an encompassing, holobiont framework.
