A photo of the disability Pride Flag is shown on the screen. The flag was designed by Ann Magill, a disability activist. Each color of the flag represents different disabilities within the disability community. Photos are now shown of landmarks, DNEM staff, and prominent figures in Washington DC. On July 21-24, staff from DNEM traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in the National Council on Independent Living Conference. This powerful gathering brought together advocates from across the country to learn, connect, and raise their voices in unity. It was a wonderful way to begin our A.M.P.E.D. Program (Advocate. Motivate. Participate. Educate. Defend.) The conference featured powerful voices who inspired and energized our movement. Lateefah Simon, making history as the first legally blind person elected to Congress, reminded us that the fight for disability rights is not about party lines, but about justice. Senator Bernie Sanders also addressed the crowd with passion, encouragement, and unwavering support. Our team also marched on Capitol Hill to protest against legislation that adversely impacts the disability community and demanded Policy, Not Politics. We proudly stood in solidarity to defend the rights of people with disabilities and celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the ADA. On July 24, DNEM Staff participated in outreach at a Disability Pride Social Event in Ferndale. Representatives from the City of Ferndale, as well as other organizations, provided information and resources to attendees and Ferndale residents. Together, everybody celebrated Disability Pride Month, reflected on how far we’ve come, and enjoyed ice cream. Photos are shown of DNEM staff and participants at this event. Our ReConnect Team also held fun recreational activities. On July 22, adaptive golf took place at Red Oaks Golf Course in Madison Heights. The weather outside was beautiful and perfect for golf. Photos are shown of participants having a great time golfing and socializing with each other. Adaptive kayaking also took place throughout the month of July. The weather was mixed. Some of the days were sunny and other days it rained. The rain did not deter consumers from showing up and having a great time. Photos are shown of DNEM consumers kayaking on the water and taking shelter on one of the days when rain began pouring. Thanks for watching!
