Heavy taxation, corruption, and harsh treatment of miners and peasants—especially around the Falu copper mine, one of Europe’s most important economic sites—sparked growing unrest. Miners and peasants in Dalarna rose in revolt, seizing control of Falun and driving out royal officials. Led by Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson, the rebellion quickly spread across Sweden. Although not a single pitched battle, the uprising at Falun became a powerful symbol of popular resistance and marked a turning point that weakened the Kalmar Union’s authority and strengthened Swedish demands for self-rule.
