The Battle of Fredrikshamn (1809) took place during the Finnish War, fought between Sweden and the Russian Empire. Fredrikshamn (modern-day Hamina) was a strategically important fortified port in southeastern Finland. In the spring of 1809, Russian forces advanced steadily westward. The Swedish army, weakened by earlier defeats, poor supply lines, and overwhelming Russian numbers, was forced to withdraw. After fighting and pressure on the defenses, Fredrikshamn fell into Russian hands. The loss of the city had major consequences. It marked the collapse of organized Swedish resistance in southern Finland and directly contributed to the end of the war. Later that year, the Treaty of Fredrikshamn was signed, in which Sweden ceded Finland to Russia. This ended more than 600 years of Swedish rule in Finland and led to Finland becoming an autonomous Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire.
