Louis-Nicolas Davout (1770–1823), one of Napoleon’s youngest marshals—promoted in 1804 at just 34—earned a reputation as the most disciplined and consistently effective of the Emperor’s commanders. Unlike some marshals who relied on flair, Davout built victory on relentless drill, strict order, and iron control over his corps. His troops feared his severity but trusted his competence. His finest hour came at Auerstädt in 1806, where with a single corps of roughly 26,000 men he defeated the main Prussian army more than twice his size.
