Cottonwood Pass to Onion Valley JMT section hike in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains, California

On July 2, 2025, we set off from the Cottonwood Pass trailhead in Horseshoe Meadows (near Lone Pine, CA) on a 5-day, 4-night, 56-mile backpacking trip into the beautiful Sierra Nevada back country. After backpacking the entire John Muir Trail going Southbound in September of 2019, we decided we also want to hike the JMT Northbound. So far, we've done three other NOBO sections (that you can find in our video library). This is our fourth and final section, completing our goal of also hiking the entire JMT Northbound! This trip included one of the most beautiful sections along the John Muir Trail. We started at Cottonwood Pass trailhead, (about 20 miles before the JMT), then onto Chicken Spring Lake, Big Whitney Meadow, Rock Creek Lake, Crabtree Meadow, Bighorn Plateau, Forester Pass, and ending over Kearsarge Pass to Onion Valley. We decided not to do Mt. Whitney on this trip, as we just hiked it again about 10 months ago. If you would like to hike the John Muir Trail Northbound, but can't do the whole thing at once, due to timing, work, physical fitness, or otherwise- we highly recommend this section hike.
