Onion Valley to South Lake - John Muir Trail NOBO section hike #1, 70 miles of the JMT North

After backpacking the entire John Muir Trail going Southbound in September of 2019, we decided we also want to do the JMT Northbound. So far, we haven't been able to get enough time off to do the entire trail at once, so we decided to do a few section hikes going North. This is the first trip toward completing that goal. In July 2021, we set off from Onion Valley trailhead near Independence, CA on a 6 day, 5 night adventure into the beautiful Sierra Nevada back country along the JMT. Our goal was to head over 5 passes, including entering at Kearsarge Pass, then on to Glen Pass, Pinchot Pass, Mather pass and exiting over Bishop Pass to South Lake, near Bishop, CA. This trip would be roughly 70 miles, and work our way along some of the most beautiful parts of the John Muir Trail. If you would like to hike the John Muir Trail Northbound, but can't do the whole thing at once, due to timing, work, physical fitness, or otherwise- we highly recommend this section hike.
