I upgraded the Z-axis travel on my mini milling machine… but then the head wouldn’t reach the table! Here’s how I fixed it with a custom bracket and a longer gas strut. In this video, I show how I solved a frustrating limitation on my mini mill: after extending the head lift range for more clearance, the gas spring stopped the head from reaching all the way down to the table. This was a problem for flat workpieces clamped directly to the table—especially large plates that can’t be held upright in a vise. Rather than ditch the strut or risk a heavy, unstable head, I designed a longer mounting bracket with multiple holes for precise positioning. I also replaced the gas strut with a longer one, enabling full travel from top to bottom of the column. Along the way, I show the full build process: cutting the steel bracket, milling it to size, drilling mounting holes, and installing the final adjustable solution. If you've ever struggled with limited Z-travel on your mini mill, or if you’re planning a gas strut upgrade, this is a simple, low-cost way to get full functionality. • Compatible with most mini mills (Sieg X2-style) • No changes to the mill frame • Uses standard tools and parts • Fully adjustable for different strut lengths Watch my other videos: • Toolmaking Ideas • Mini Mill Ideas Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction 00:32 Why it Matters 01:33 The Solution 02:27 Building It 04:49 Final Results #GreatIdeasCatalogue, #ImprovedGasSpring, #MiniMilling
