In the conventional deadlift, the knee and the hip usually lockout simultaneously. This is because the moment arm for which they travel is relatively the same. However on the sumo deadlift, the distance which the knee's travel is much shorter due to the widened foot placement. As a result, individuals often mistime the lockout and will often experience a premature lockout of the hips. This then becomes a highly difficult position to correct from as you would need to uncurl the hips first. Hence, the cue of rapid knee extension breaking the floor for the sumo deadlift to achieve a premature knee lockout first is a highly effective cue. Even when the knees are locked out, a simple back extension can be used to lock out the hips.
