22 March 2023. Cloudy. Driving from Guangzhou to Foshan. Starting near the Fushe Road tunnel on Nandaganshu, in Panyu's Dashi area—right across from Wancheng Plaza, by the Yuexiu Hongjingtai residential complex . Destination: Foshan's Qiandeng Lake-Financial High-tech Zone. The driver took a village road—revealing another side of Guangzhou. If no one told you, you'd never guess this is Guangzhou. ——— That was the biggest impression. Outside the window: not what you'd expect. Not Zhujiang New Town's skyline, not Shangxiajiu's arcades, not the crowds at Huacheng Square. Instead: narrow streets, dense houses, small shops, people walking. This is Dashi area. Yuexiu Hongjingtai sits east of Fushe Road, north of Nandaganshu . Walk 700 meters: Metro Line 3, Dashi Station—one stop to Wanbo, six stops to Zhujiang New Town . But the driver skipped the elevated roads, winding through backstreets instead. ——— These are places quietly transforming. Dashi is a mature residential area, home to over 30,000 market entities . But the villages—Li Village, Mengyong, Yongkou—keep another face. Narrow lanes, handshake buildings, tangled wires. Street-level: grocery stores, fast food, repair shops. Above: rental rooms. The driver: “This road used to be narrower—small workshops everywhere. Some demolished, some repaired—much better now.” He pointed. “Those handshake buildings—mostly young people working in Wanbo.” ——— Further on, approaching Foshan. Huadi Waterway lies between Guangzhou's Liwan and Foshan's Nanhai. This 4‑kilometer cross‑boundary river once suffered from water quality issues due to administrative borders. Now a “Happy River”—Class IV water quality. The Haijing Dadao East renovation completed last year—from Ligui Road to Yanbu, 5 kilometers in about 5 minutes. Years ago: at least half an hour. On the riverbank, Yongpingwei's old factory buildings are transforming into “Yi Jiu Yun”—container markets, coffee warehouses, art warehouses. Soon, young people from both Guangzhou and Foshan will come here for coffee and river views. ——— Arrival: Qiandeng Lake-Financial High-tech Zone. Foshan's urban cover. 2026: Guicheng aims for “five highest”—highest enterprise concentration, highest financial activity, highest resident satisfaction, highest visitor inflow, highest information utilization. Qiandeng Lake Venture Capital Town: 1,839 fund projects, over 241.5 billion yuan scale, top five nationally in registered funds. Outside: orderly streets, modern offices,精心 parks. ——— From Dashi's handshake buildings to Qiandeng Lake's skyline—one hour. That hour showed Guangzhou's multiplicity—vanishing villages, stubborn small shops, daily commuters, half‑demolished buildings. That hour also showed Guangzhou-Foshan integration—Huadi Waterway's transformation, Haijing Dadao's connection, Yongpingwei's renewal. ——— Where do we begin to understand a city?
