The future is riddled with uncertainty. Too often, fear of instability drives youth away from pursuing their dreams towards more conventional career paths. Dena Chang, a singer-songwriter with a degree in nursing, talks about the struggles and triumphs in challenging herself to rebel against the norm and follow her passion. Dena Chang is a Taiwanese singer-songwriter and influencer currently based in Taipei. She took up the guitar at 13 and began songwriting after being inspired by singer Taylor Swift’s music. Starting in various singing competitions, Chang entered the 2013 Avex International Auditions in Japan, finishing second place and garnering media attention over her vocals and guitar skills. Chang continued to grow her base via YouTube where she would upload acoustic covers of her favorite songs before slowly moving towards songwriting. In 2015, Dena was awarded a scholarship to attend the prestigious Berklee School Of Music after completing a degree in nursing. Despite having lived in Taiwan for most of her life, Dena is fluently bilingual as a result of her upbringing by parents – she now writes both in English and Chinese; buoyed by her sweet, soulful voice and passion for sharing her life with the world, she hopes to reach vaster international audiences someday. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
