#classicrock #60smusic #themonkees Join me as I shine the album spotlight on the tenth album release by the Monkees, the 60's made for TV group. Former child actors Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz, singer-songwriter Michael Nesmith and Folk musician Peter Tork were hired as actors to play musicians in a TV show. After providing only vocals on the first two albums, the group won a battle to play the instruments and select the songs on their third and fourth album and became a real band. The band broke up in 1970 following the album Changes. Pool It, their first album in 17 year, arrived with high expectations because the group, featuring Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork were still souring high from one of Pop music’s greatest comebacks. The revival was jumpstarted by a 22 hour Monkees episode marathon. This coincided with an already planned 20th Anniversary tour with Dolenz, Jones and Tork and the re-releases of the long out of print original Monkees albums by Rhino Records. By the end of year, the Monkees had seven albums on the Billboard Charts at the same time, one of them a new platinum Best of Album, and a new hit single, "That Was Then, This Is Now". By the time of the release of Pool IT, MTV had soured on the group when they, at the last minute, cancelled an appearance on MTV's Live Superbowl Tailgate Party telecast in January ‘87. MTV executives denied any retribution saying that the relationship between the group and MTV had run simply run its course. MTV's blackball of the clever video for the first single, "Heart and Soul", discouraged radio's acceptance and the single failed to make the Top 40. Without a hit single, Pool It stalled on the Album charts at #72. It, however, did sell 125,000 copies, a disappointment but more than any other Monkees album since The Birds and The Bees and The Monkees in 1968. "Every Step of The Way" was the second single and failed to chart at all. This album contains songwriting contributions from Tommy James, Ian Hunter, Wreckless Eric, Simon Byrne, Andrew Howell, Eddie Howell, Michael Levine, John David, Arlan Day and Peter Tork and Davy Jones. Bobby Hart with his then partner, Dick Eastman provided a song. This means that Bobby Hart had a song on every Monkees Studio album except Head and Justus. All of the other contributions were in collaboration with Tommy Boyce. #classicrock #60smusic #themonkees #vinylstory
