(5 May 1999) Indonesian/Nat East Timor's spiritual leader says he supports a U-N agreement to let the East Timorese decide for themselves between having greater autonomy or complete independence from Indonesia. The U-N agreement is expected to be signed later on Wednesday in New York. Bishop Carlos Belo said he hoped the agreement would also bring peace to the troubled region. East Timor's Spiritual Leader, Bishop Carlos Belo says he's pleased with a U-N proposal to allow the East Timorese decide whether or not they want full independence from Indonesia. The Bishop's comments came as he met with Finland's deputy Foreign Minister, Kirsti Lintonen. Lintonen is in the territory to discuss her country overseeing the August 8 ballot as part of a U-N observor team. Indonesia invaded the half-island territory in 1975 and annexed it a year later. Indonesia and Portugal, East Timor's former colonial master, are expected to endorse the U-N proposal in New York on Wednesday. Under the agreement, U-N police advisers will work with the Indonesian military in an attempt to prevent violence during the upcomming ballot, which has been opposed by pro-Indonesian militiamen. The first U-N contingent is expected to arrive in East Timor as soon as May 10. Indonesia softened and then reversed its stand on East Timor in the wake of last year ousting of authoritarian President Suharto, who ordered the invasion and ignored calls by international leaders to consider a vote on self-determination. The Bishop said he would fully back the U-N agreement. SOUNDBITE: (Indonesian) "I support and accept that agreement because finally both countries Portugal and Indonesia can resolve a difficult part of history." SUPER CAPTION: Bishop Carlos Belo, East Timor's spiritual leader Bishop Belo also said people in the territory need to tackle disagreements over the issue peacefully. SOUNDBITE: (Indonesian) "Sometimes these radical tendencies need to be toned down. We live in the age of globalisation and in a democratic world everybody has the right to reject decisions but in this world many problems are solved through concessions so we can live together in harmony." The military says it's impartial, but it's claimed troops have stood by as militiamen killed civilians suspected of separatist activities on at least two occasions in recent weeks. Dozens of people have died in the fighting. Pro-independence rebels have also staged attacks on the military.
