Peggy Gordon (Traditional) First collected in Canada, but possibly an Irish song. In the video appears a quotation from the Irish writer Oscar Wilde, from a letter to his friend Robert Ross, written while Wilde was in prison, where he gives instructions regarding the publication of another long letter written during his prison sentence, later published by Ross under the title “De Profundis“. These lines of Wilde's have nothing directly to do with the song, except that Wilde was Irish and the song might have originated in Ireland, in any case it has long been popular with Irish performers. But I feel that these lines of Wilde's letter fit well into the spirit of the song; Wilde is talking about how important expression is to an artist, and the lyrics of Peggy Gordon are an expression of unrequited love, that old and everlasting theme. And many performers of songs have talked about how singing their troubles can help them feel better, and it indeed sometimes being a necessity for their own peace of mind. As often with folk songs, there are many versions of the lyrics. One verse goes like this: “ I wish I was in some lonesome valley, where womankind could not be found, where little birds sing on the rushes, and every moment a different sound.“ Sinéad O‘Connor has as very good live version (Radio Spain).
