What happens to your faith when life gets hard, relationships get messy, or church feels inconvenient? In our new series Better Together, Pastor Ben Miller kicks things off with a message called Remain Rooted - a powerful call back to biblical community, spiritual family, and the kind of staying that produces lasting growth. The miracle of Pentecost was not only that thousands were saved, but that a divided culture became a devoted community centered on Jesus. We all face challenges that pull us away from real community - external pressures (work, schedules, distance, life stages) and internal pressures (hurt, fear, conflict, insecurity). But the truth is: we are better when you show up. And God often forms us most in the places we are tempted to leave. This message also confronts a major cultural current: a transient mindset that quickly uproots when things get difficult. Pastor Ben shares why roots matter, why spiritual maturity requires stability, and why the fruit God wants to grow in you is connected to staying planted in healthy soil. You’ll hear a memorable picture of sequoia trees and the “vow of stability,” plus Jesus’ own invitation in John 15 to remain, stay, and abide, not just as individuals, but as a whole community connected to the Vine. If you’ve ever struggled to commit, wondered if it’s worth it, or felt the pull to isolate, this message is for you. Even if you're a dedicated person in life, this will reinforce that too! Remain rooted. Stay and be formed. Grow together. Better together. 📖 Scriptures Shared: Acts 2 (Pentecost and the formation of a united, devoted church community) Psalm 145 (Generation to generation testimony of God’s works) Psalm 9:1 I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all the marvelous things you have done. Romans 12:2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. John 15:1-17 Jesus is the Vine, believers are the branches - fruitfulness comes from remaining and loving one another. Saint Benedict's Vow of Stability: A commitment to remain rooted in one community, one monastery, and one spiritual family rather than leaving when things become difficult. CHURCH = Ekklesia = “called out ones” What are you holding onto that is keeping you from going ALL IN? Transient culture says: “If it’s hard, move on.” Benedict says: “If it’s hard, stay and be formed.” John 15: “Remain in Me” Greek meno which means: To stay, remain or abide. Saint Benedict encouraged believers to commit to remaining rooted in one community, one church, and one spiritual family. 💡 Key Takeaway: Community is not optional for spiritual maturity. If it’s hard, you don’t always have to leave. In God’s Kingdom, staying rooted is often how you’re formed - and how lasting fruit is grown. 🎯 Call to Action: Ask the Holy Spirit, “What am I holding onto (or what is holding onto me) that’s keeping me from going all in?” Take 1 step toward being rooted this week: Join a Life Group (https://www.joychurchbend.com/life-gr..., serve on a team, talk to a leader, and choose stability in the place God has planted you. 📲 If this message encouraged you, share it with someone who needs community, and leave a comment with 1 step you’re taking to remain rooted. 🔔 Subscribe to Joy Church Bend and turn on notifications so you don’t miss new messages and series. 📍 Join us in person in Bend, Oregon or online each week.
