Hello, I'm Joan, and this book is called Kin by Tayari Jones. A few years ago, I read her book, An American Marriage, which I absolutely adored, so I was very keen to get my eyes across this one, and I'm so glad I did. It's the story of two young girls, Bernice and Annie, who are growing up motherless in the Jim Crow era of the American South in a little town called Honeysuckle in Louisiana. They're as close as sisters, but their lives take them in very different directions. Bernice heads off to Atlanta where she goes to college and she meets a young man from a very wealthy family where the mother tries very hard to get the country bumpkin out of Bernice. And Annie heads off towards Memphis with some adventures on the way and she's in search of her mother. This is stunningly told. It's the story of two young black women trying to navigate the landscape of misogyny and racism and cruelty of those times. And how their love for each other can withstand the test of time and distance. I just loved it.
